It's Fall Y'all - What does winter weather do to your natural hair?

Updated: Oct 25, 2023

Product Highlight & Natural Hair Winter Maintenance Tips

We have entered into the Fall season, which means winter is quickly approaching! Here's a thought - We prepare with preventative care of our homes and cars, we need to do the same for our hair. It may seem silly but our hair is effected by the weather just as it is effected by the food we eat and the amount of water we drink.

During the winter months, it is imperative to find products that will help your hair maintain moisture. Cold air can make our hair brittle like you would not believe! I recall before having microlocs the winter was when I wore protective styles to prevent my hair from drying out during the day. Otherwise it was almost impossible to comb through my hair without pulling it out. If I was in between appointments and had to wear my hair out in the winter, I added a deep conditioner and leave-in conditioner to my wash day regimen... I think this is a good transition to the product that I want to highlight this month.

The product that I would like to bring to your attention is the Maedae Honey Deep Conditioner!! For the month of October, you can use: WINTER23 to receive 10% off.

The Maedae Honey Deep Conditioner is intended to be used after any Maedae brand shampoo. When I used this product, I sectioned my hair into four parts; used a wide tooth comb (I like the Pattern Beauty comb by Tracee Ellis Ross), and then applied the deep conditioner to each section. If you ever had a relaxer, I applied it like that (smile). I provided visuals below.

The shrinkage was so bad y'all!!

I loved my curls!

Unlike with a relaxer, I combed through my hair once I had the product applied to each section. Check out the curls!!

Steps on How to Apply

So, I will say that this product was once in a jar but ladies, come on now! I was getting products under my nails, and who likes that?! So I changed it to the pump bottle. Anyway, I do recommend you parting your hair into 4 sections (unless you are one of my pixie cut beauties!). The sections just make it easier and ensure that you cover all of your hair. I applied from the roots and worked it down to the ends.

Steps After Application

Once I applied the product to my entire head, I placed a shower cap on and wore it for 20-30 minutes. I did not sit under the dryer; however, if you go this route, you can sit under the dryer for 15 minutes. I would recommend setting the dryer to low-medium heat. The goal is to make sure the product penetrates your hair. After you've worn the shower cap for the amount of time recommended (with or without a dryer), I suggest that you wash your hair with warm water. Then, style as desired. I do not follow with conditioner when I use the deep conditioner.

Be sure to apply Maedae Hair Growth Serum to your scalp and massage your head. This will increase blood flow which will stimulate hair growth.

7 Winter Tips for Natural Hair

  1. moisturize, Moisturize, MOISTURIZE!

  2. If you wear protective styles, make sure you oil your scalp at least twice or three times a week

  3. Sleep with a silk/satin pillowcase...even if you have a bonnet or scarf

  4. Make sure you are trimming your ends every 6-8 weeks

  5. Use a leave-in conditioner

  6. Do not comb or brush your hair while it is dry

  7. Try to stay away from heat

Finally

Do what works best for your hair to maintain moisture during the winter months. Prior to having microlocs installed, I had been natural (no relaxer) for over 10 years and did the "big chop" at year 5.
